There are 47 schools in Georgia’s 7A classification. That means that theoretically there is about a 2% chance that you would win the state championship. Obviously sports doesn’t work with everyone getting even chances to win, but it still incredibly hard to do. Grayson came into this year without a basketball championship, they ended the year with two.
Grayson entered the girl’s basketball season as favorites to win their first ever state championship. They were lead by ESPN 4 star senior Danielle Carnegie (Georgia Tech commit).
Their season opened up with a scare with a 55-52 double overtime win over Mount Paran Christian in their 2nd game. They then went on a dominating run of 11 games winning all, their closest game being a 16 point win over McDonogh. Then they beat Blanche Ely by 7 before dominating the rest of the regular season. This included a 17 point win over IMG Academy who finished the year 5th in the national rankings (MaxPreps)!
Playoffs rolled around and Grayson never had a game within 20 points winning their first ever state championship and going 32-0 in total. Grayson finished the year 4th in MaxPreps national rankings.
On the boys side, Grayson came in after a semifinal finish last year. They were lead by 247 sports 4 star senior guard Gicarri Harris (Purdue commit) and 4 star junior Jacob Wilkins (UGA commit like his dad Dominique).
They started off the year by defeating McEachern 79-62 who were lead by the number 1 player in the state Ace Bailey. They had a scare a little bit later beating Sandy Creek by 1. After many dominate wins they were shocked by South Carolina team Ridge View for their first of the season. A few games later they suffered their second loss of the season to Perry from Arizona who were lead by 5 star Koa Peat. After surviving Newton 76-70 in OT they closed out their regular season by defeating Newton again 75-65 to win their region.
Playoffs started and after dominating their way past Colquitt County, Carrollton, Peachtree Ridge, and Milton. They set up a rematch with McEachern and Ace Bailey. After a back and fourth first half Grayson pulled away in the second half winning 51-41 behind Jacob Wilkins’ 14 points. Grayson had finally gotten the state championship they had also seemed to evade them. They finished the season 5th in MaxPreps national rankings.
Grayson basketball, both girls and boys combined, lost 2 games all season and never lost to a school from the state of Georgia. Both finished top 5 in MaxPreps national rankings and were both number 1 in Georgia. Even though the schools are both loosing big players both teams have players coming back that will keep them contenders for next year’s basketball season. It is safe to say that this season might just be the most dominating season by a school from Georgia in basketball ever!
