Westlake vs Gainseville

Last Friday, two Georgia powers went up against each other in a must-see game. As the Gainesville Red Elephants travailed to Atlanta to take on Westlake High School. Outside of the game, Westlake was retiring former player/current Falcons Cornerback A.J. Terrell’s Jersey. The game had to be delayed 20 minutes due to weather. The Red Elephants were dominate from the jump and Westlake could not get anything going. When the game ended it went the Red Elephants way winning 41-7. As for the different players, here are some not worthy performances:

Most underrated: Taz Smith WR Senior Gainesville

Taz Smith could not be contained, as the Westlake corners could not find an answer for the wide-out all nigh long. His combination of speed and route running ability allowed him to open up the game for the Gainesville offense. He got a touchdown in the game and allowed the offense to open up and make many big plays. He is also the punter for Gainesville, and made one of the greatest plays you will every see after a high snap forced him to run all the way to the endzone as the punter. He is now 3 games into his senior year and is (and will continue to be) a big reason why Gainesville has started the year 3-0.

Best underclassman: Kharim Hughley QB Sophomore Gainesville

The many throwing the ball to Smith and Co. will surprise any who watched when told he is only a Sophomore! Hughley had a very good pocket presence Friday night, being able to read the field like an upperclassman. Hughley tossed for 4 touchdowns on the night. It is crazy to think that he will still have 2 more years after this to light up the Peach State.

Defensive Player of the Game: Xavier Griffin Edge Junior Gainesville

Xavier Griffin is one of the hottest defensive names in the state right now. He showed why against Westlake, recking havoc wherever he was. His play of the game came in the 4th as got a sack on 4th down with Westlake inside the RedZone. The 4 star USC (Southern California) commit still has much more in him this year.

Player of the game: Jeremiah Ware Wide Receiver Senior Gainesville

Jeremiah Ware stepped onto the field and instantly took over the game. He is an elusive wide receiver that is hard to tackle in the open field and showed that last season when he was 4th among junior receivers in the state with over 1000 yards. This season seems to be no different as Ware if off to an amazing start. This included tonight where he caught a pair of touchdowns and was a constant spark for the Gainesville offense. So do not be surprised when the Georgia Southern commit continues to ball out this season for the Red Elephants.
